Simply A Beautiful Film Aug 27, 2008 Blade Runner has been described by film critics and film lovers as both a film that fails to live up to the greatness it could have achieved as well as a film that is unique, beautiful and brilliant. Roeper had said, and I'm paraphrasing, that the film was visually stunning and spectacular but that the story lacks relevance or meaning.
The way I see it, film is an art and art doesn't have to mean anything. A work of art is what the artist wants it to be. I didn't see a particular point to Blade Runner, I saw the film as a dream. The soundtrack, though excellent, is very quiet which had allowed me to become emersed more deeply into the visuals, allowing me to observe the surroundings of the characters, making the depiction of the future that much more real.
For me, Blade Runner is a perfect exercise in imagining and predicting the future. Most of the time, readers and movie goers have found that most predictions of the future have been way off. Such was the case for 2001: A Space Odyssey, its been seven years after the real 2001 year and we haven't even returned to the moon or had a manned mission to Mars. But imagining and predicting the future can inspire us to move forward with technology and social affairs.
Don't believe the negativity surrounding this film, if you like science fiction, this is one of the greats.
As described Aug 25, 2008 It was received as described. I was looking for this edition in other places and found here in Amazon. Good price and excellent delivery service.
The best science fiction movie ever made Aug 24, 2008 Bladerunner, another extremely influential science fiction movie based on Dick's "Do androids dream of electronic sheep," tells the now classic tale of Dekkard, a Bladerunner, a highly trained assassin whose job is to 'retire' rouge Replicants, or biological androids. What sets this film apart is it's atmosphere, aided by near perfect art direction and spot on details. The new 5 DVD set, complete with a remastered HD version of the film that was created using the 4k original film reels, is simply a must have for any science fiction film fan.
excllent set for en excellent movie Aug 21, 2008 Finally, BR fans can watch ALL FIVE different versions of this movie.
I longed for seeing the "International" cut again, after having viewed it repeatedly on cable in the 80's. This version has a few more violent scenes than the theatrical version. It also has the narration by Harrison FOrd, which I personally liked b/c it gave the film a friendlier feel, made Deckard almost certainly "human", and has the so-called "happy ending".
The Final Cut is great technically b/c the audio & video are enhanced & updated with modern technology that makes it a pleasure to watch & hear. However, this version makes fairly clear that Deckard was indeed a replicant, which is a notion I initially scoffed at & rejected. However, when director Ridley Scott says, in the commentary track & elsewhere in the DVD set, that his intention was to have Deckard be a replicant, then that's the way it is. If you can accept this fact, then you will LOVE the Final Cut version of BR.
If you still prefer Deckard be a human, then you can still enjoy the 1982 International Version.
The other discs are excellent, discussing the making of BR, the cult status it has achieved, etc. Nothing but great background & interviews throughout this DVD set.
The 5th disc gives you a 5th version of BR which, although of poor visual quality, has some different scenes in it & different dialogue.
You also get a silver unicorn replica & police spinner car replica for buying the 5-disc set.
A PIECE OF ART Aug 18, 2008
I was a teenager when BLADE RUNNER was on Madrid's movie theaters. One Sunday I went to the theater and the film was retired! I had to wait two years and I saw the VHS at last. I bought Director's Cut DVD at the begining of this Century but this edition is impossible to overcome!
